Breath is more than air moving in and out. In the yogic tradition, pranayama, the practice of conscious breathing, works with energy itself. It is subtle, and it is powerful. Some people call it magic. They aren't entirely wrong.
inhale•exhale
This eight-week course is a progressive, traditional pranayama practice — approached with the same curiosity and care as all the work we do here. We build gradually, never forcing, always listening.
We begin where most of us actually are — largely unaware of our breath, breathing in ways that have become habitual and unconscious.
Over eight weeks we become students of our own breath. We learn to feel the breath moving — in the belly, the ribs, the chest, the back. We explore the relationship between the inhale and the exhale, learning to lengthen, balance, and refine. We work with the natural pauses — the moments of stillness that live between the breaths — and discover what's there.
We also explore traditional techniques — alternate nostril breathing, humming breath, cooling breath, and others — always with attention to how the nervous system responds, always at a pace that respects individual capacity. Breath is never forced. The emphasis throughout is on steadiness, clarity, and sensitivity.
Because this work is informed by modern breath science as well as the yogic tradition, what you learn doesn't stay on the mat. The breath becomes clearer, more available, more present in daily life.
By the end of each class you will feel it — a settledness, a groundedness, a sense of having arrived somewhere in yourself.
how it works
Each class is one hour. We meet for eight weeks — long enough to build a real practice, short enough to stay focused.
Online sessions take place live on Zoom and are recorded. The recording is yours for one week — time to revisit the practice before the next class. In person sessions at The Loft are not recorded.
Both options cover the same material. Maximum 8 people in each.
Please do not eat for at least two hours before class.
who this is for
No experience necessary. This course welcomes complete beginners as well as experienced practitioners who want to go deeper. If you have a body and a breath — and a genuine curiosity about what's possible — you're ready.
